There are many issues facing us as individuals and as a society.  Most important issues also have international or planetary implications as well.  We focus on one of the most basic of human activities -- the production of food.  Agricultural practices are intimately connected to civilization as a whole and the way we eat every day.

As an organization working for an ecologically sound regional food supply, we work on many fronts simultaneously. In the bombardment of advertising and information that floods us every day, it is difficult to keep some perspective on what we can do ourselves to change the world a little bit at a time.  Working to change how we grow our food can dramatically improve environmental quality, benefit our overall health and preserve the beauty of our communities.

NOFA-NY, Inc. is helping organic farmers with the technical and practical issues of growing crops organically.  We are working to increase research into the problematic issues still facing organic growers.  We are advocates for organic farming and food quality in New York State. We are fighting for the survival of the small family farm.  We are working to preserve the integrity of certified organic farmers, who must now comply with federal organic production rules that are in danger of being systematically weakened by regulators.

It is possible to take a global view of agricultural issues or to simply look at the food on our plates.  In the articles that follow, you will find a range of perspectives written by our members for our newsletter on topics that people are discussing now.  Some issues are directly related to government policies that allow certain questionable practices, such as spreading sewage sludge on agricultural land.  Others explain the practices of organic farmers, who do not use sludge on their lands.
