Nursery Propagation & Production Manager

Position Description:

Arthur’s Point Farm (APF), a Hudson Valley plant nursery located in Ghent, New York, is hiring a Propagation & Production Manager (PPM). The nursery, launched in 2020, sells bare-root and potted trees, shrubs and perennial wildflowers for agroforestry, conservation plantings, ecological restoration, and climate resilience. We focus on species, cultivars, and local ecotypes that are underrepresented at regional plant nurseries and are currently expanding our selection of native and non-native fruits and nuts. We use organic, biodynamic, and regenerative agriculture practices, and are committed to ecological restoration on the farm in addition to nursery production.

Responsibilities: The PPM is responsible for planning and managing the propagation and production of nursery stock, including plants grown in-ground, in raised beds, air-prune beds, high tunnels, potted plants, and within various propagation settings around the farm. This includes the production and procurement of planting materials (e.g., seed, cuttings, scion, rootstock, plugs, and bare-roots) through collection on farm and locally and purchase from other nurseries. The PPM works directly with and manages the field crew to implement the nursery production plan, and is responsible for maintenance and organization of the farm’s equipment and infrastructure. Working with the Managing Director and the Sales & Marketing Manager, the PPM assists with periodic updates to the Nursery Plan, including changes in product offerings, quantities, and pricing. The PPM also supports sales and marketing and customer fulfillment, including through participation in events, communication with customers, and contributing to website content and social media outreach.

Qualifications & Experience:

Minimum 3-5 years of perennial plant propagation and production experience;
Nursery management experience (in-ground and greenhouse);
Experience operating and maintaining nursery and other farm equipment (incl., tractors, tractor implements such as subsoilers, plows, etc.);
Strong oral and written communication skills (ideally including oral Spanish skills);
Experience managing a farm crew of 2-4 farm laborers;
Customer relationship management (e.g. landscapers and the general public) and product fulfillment for customers;
Proficiency with Google Suite applications (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms), particularly in designing and managing complex spreadsheets and planning documents;
Candidates must be detail-oriented, self-motivated, and comfortable working both individually and as a member of a team;
Ability to work efficiently, independently, and cooperatively;
Capable of demanding and repetitive physical labor, including lifting 50+ pounds safely and repeatedly and working safely and effectively in all weather conditions;
Basic carpentry skills desired; and
Respect for safety guidelines and willingness to follow safety procedures.

Supervision: This position reports directly to the Managing Director.

Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience with annual bonuses tied to performance. Minimum 40 hours/week with expectation to work longer hours during intensive planting, and harvesting seasons.
