Beacon Farmers' Market Manager

Position Description:

Common Ground is seeking a part-time, year-round manager for all aspects of the Sunday Beacon Farmers’ Market. This is a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about community engagement, the local economy, and food security; energetic and physically adept; and enjoys connecting with community members!

The Market Manager is responsible for enrolling and supporting a diverse vendor community, orchestrating market operations including running the SNAP/EBT token system and the ‘Greens4Greens’ double up program, cultivating an inclusive market experience for all customers, and leading community fundraisers including Soup4Greens.

The mission of the Common Ground Farmers’ Markets is to feed and engage the local community, support local farms and businesses, and create a more just food system. From May through November, the Beacon Farmers’ Market is outdoors with 25-35 vendors per week from 10am-3pm, and from December through April the market moves indoors with 10-20 vendors from 10am-2pm.


On-site - (On-site time will be shared with the assistant market manager. The market manager will typically manage three markets per month and will lead coordination with assistant.)

Approximately 6:30am to 3pm outdoor season / 7:00am to 3:00pm indoor season Beacon

Set up and break down market manager tent and table and market day-of signage.

Measure, mark and assign vendor spaces

Ensure vendor load-in and load-out runs smoothly

Ensure compliance with State and City regulations

Serve as vendor liaison and resource as needed

Staff the market table to answer customer questions and distribute food benefits

Fully administer and promote all of the Market’s food benefit programs including distributing ‘Greens4Greens’ checks to vendors and redeeming SNAP/EBT tokens, FreshConnect, and ‘Greens4Greens’ checks from vendors

Collect vendor rent and submit market income to the CGF admin manager

On-site troubleshooting

Stay on-site until all vendors have packed up and cleared street

Ensure all vendors have cleared street by 3pm (outdoor season) and cleared of the VFW Hall 3:00pm (indoor season)


Vendors/business relations

Recruit and enroll vendors with the goals of supporting local and sustainable agriculture, bringing high quality products to the market, and prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Monitor vendor compliance with insurance requirements, fee payment, and required certifications

Recruit and schedule community organizations, special events, programming, and entertainment (Within the constraints of our city agreement and current health restrictions)

Seek business sponsors, community sponsors and partnerships


Lead outreach to educate community members who rely on SNAP/EBT and Fresh Connect of available benefits and encourage attendance

Plan and fundraise for the annual Greens4Greens double up program fundraiser Soup4Greens with support from the Assistant Manager, Market Committee, CGF Staff, and Green Teen

Monitor weather for possible market cancellations and communicate any cancellations with all parties


Work to renew license agreement with the City of Beacon and the VFW before the start of each season in coordination with the Common Ground Farm Board and Market Committee


Monitor the market budget together with the Executive Director to stay on track for each annual budget cycle

Attend weekly staff meetings, work together with assistant manager and provide support to Newburgh market staff

Attend Market Committee meetings throughout the year to discuss market growth, vision, vendor enrollment and fundraising opportunities (attendance at all market committee meetings is encouraged)

Oversee weekly marketing content work led by assistant manager: social media, email campaigns, banners, and paper flyers

Develop and implement creative outreach strategies to ensure each market is well attended and accessible by all members of the Beacon community

Maintain weekly and seasonal trackers and accounting records, including food benefits usage, Greens4Greens usage, market attendance, and seasonal surveys

Work with Executive Director and Assistant Market Manager in ensuring that the website is maintained and up to date

Provide documentation and written material as needed by Executive Director for grant applications

Necessary Skills

Excellent verbal, written, and photography communication skills for in-person, social media, website, and newsletter communications

Ability to work in fast-paced, high-pressure environment, in all weather conditions

Excellent organizational skills

Ability to interact comfortably with the broader public and with people of all backgrounds

Passion for local agriculture, good food and small businesses

Must have reliable transportation

Preferred Experience

Priority given to candidates with strong ties to the Beacon community

Experience in community engagement and organizing

Experience working on nonprofits and with advisory boards

Knowledge about the administering of SNAP/EBT and other food benefit programs

Schedule: Position starts as soon as possible to train with the outgoing market manager. Aside from being on-site on Sundays and regular staff meetings, the market manager has freedom to schedule office hours/meetings as needed during the week.

Compensation: The position is 20 hrs per week, paid hourly at $20 per hour, paid vacation and sick time, all federal holidays paid time off, healthcare stipend after trial period, U-Pick CSA, 25% off all CGF education programs, and two tickets to all CGF events.
