Adapting a Farm Business to Land, Labor, & Markets
July 28, 2021 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
@ Hartwood Farm
5258 Irish Ridge Rd, Chittenango, NY 13037
Join farmers Maryellen and Matt to explore Hartwood Farm, where they grow Certified Organic vegetables, herbs, and flowers for over 200 CSA members, their local farmers market, and off-season home delivery. After years managing and owning farms across the scale spectrum in New Hampshire and the Hudson Valley, Maryellen and Matt started Hartwood Farm in 2012, with the goal of growing larger amounts of produce for a range of retail and wholesale markets. Over the years, they’ve modified their crop and market mix into something that better fits their land, soils, local markets, labor access, and lots of extreme weather swings (hopefully there won’t be snow, hail, or tornadoes for the field day). Hartwood Farm now includes 5 acres each of annual vegetables and cover crops, 5 greenhouses, and a mix of hayfields, woods, and wetlands. This farm tour will cover how Hartwood has modified and adapted its operations to work with some less than ideal situations, as well as some of the potential future growth and trials in tarping, dealing with new pests, and figuring out how to farm successfully at a challenging scale.
